Madison County (38) - Dr. Crawford W. Long (1815 - 1878)

Dr. Crawford W. Long was a surgeon and pharmacist. He is remember as the first physician to use ether as an anesthetic in surgery on March 30, 1842.

Born in Danielsville, GA (Madison County) on November 1, 1815, Long was the son of James and Elizabeth Long. His father was a state senator. It is said that Dr. Long was named after  Georgia statesman William H. Crawford.

Long attended the University of Georgia and roomed with Alexander H. Stephens who would go on to become the vice-President of the Confederate States of America. There is a plaque on the building at the University of Georgia commemorating the roommates.

A monument to Dr. Long was erected by The Woman's Club of Danielsville on March 30, 1926.

Oconee County (135) - Watkinsville

Oconee County, named for the nearby River, was once part of Clarke County.  It was founded on Feb. 24th, 1875.  Today is it essentially a suburb of Clarke County notable for its shopping malls located along the Oconee/Clarke County borders.  The county seat is Watkinsville.  

Located in downtown Watkinsville, The Eagle Tavern is considered one of the oldest buildings in Oconee County.  Most sources are unsure of the exact date when the tavern was built. It seems that the tavern was in existence as early as 1801 with some sources stating that it could have been built as early as 1794.  There is also speculation that the site was home to Fort Edwards.

If you would like to take a tour of the tavern you will need to go to the Welcome Center located across the street Monday thorough Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.
